Is Your Definition of Success Harming You?
Rethinking Success Through the Lens of Faith
Al Salam Alaikum 🌱
As we approach the final days of the blessed month, with anticipation of Ramadan's conclusion and the preparations for Eid already underway, it's time to reflect on whether we've had a "successful" Ramadan.
Now, "successful" is a loaded term with different meanings for different people.
This brings me to ponder upon what true "success" actually is.
❌ The Trap of Conventional Success
Many of us have been ensnared by society's narrow definition of “success,” focusing on materialistic pursuits like wealth, power, and status.
This perspective dominated my outlook as an entrepreneur for a significant period.
However, delving into faith-based entrepreneurship led me to a profound reevaluation of success, steering me towards a concept I now term 'Divine Success.'
The conventional model of success often revolves around financial gain, growth, and recognition, nurturing a race for high revenues and public acclaim.
While these achievements initially provided a sense of fulfillment, I gradually realized they didn't necessarily align with true success.
Diving deeper into the confluence of faith and business unveiled a distinct paradigm of success, one that transcends beyond mere worldly gains.
'Divine Success' entails thriving in both realms, aligning entrepreneurial pursuits with Quranic teachings and the Prophetic Sunnah to serve a grander purpose and positively impact society.
💥 A Shift in Perspective
This epiphany catalyzed a shift in my entrepreneurial approach.
I no longer viewed my business merely as a tool for worldly gain but as a platform for a higher calling.
My aim transformed: to create a profitable, purpose-led business pleasing to Allah and constructive for society.
As faith-based entrepreneurs, our trajectory should commence with the end goal in sight.
We strive for success in both present life and the hereafter, shaping businesses that yield benefits beyond our existence and ensuring a lasting impact even after we depart.
In striving for Divine Success, it’s essential to remember that real success is defined by being spared from the hellfire and gaining Paradise.
The Quranic verse below emphasizes this ultimate truth, highlighting the importance of using our businesses as vehicles to draw closer to this eternal success.
Embracing this perspective of Divine Success instilled serenity and fulfillment and fueled a more profound kind of success.
Witnessing my business thrive in both material and spiritual realms underscored the significance of faith as a guiding torch amidst challenges.
However, we must tread cautiously when confronted with societal success metrics.
Chasing materialistic milestones like wealth, fame, and power can distract us from our real purpose, creating a ceaseless quest for the 'next big thing.'
These societal standards fluctuate and can deflect us from our divine purpose, spiritual growth, and communal obligations.
Relying on such metrics breeds a toxic culture of comparison and competition, jeopardizing mental well-being and hindering spiritual progress.
In contrast, striving for Divine Success liberates us from societal pressures, urging us to prioritize enduring values and seek a balanced approach toward success.
Navigating within the predominantly capitalist and secular business landscape presents unique challenges for faith-first entrepreneurs.
Amidst societal expectations, adhering to faith-based principles in business is revolutionary.
Despite external pressures, integrating spiritual beliefs into our entrepreneurial journey is a testament to unwavering faith and resilience.
In this voyage towards Divine Success, it's pivotal to acknowledge our reliance on a higher power.
Success emanates ultimately from Allah (SWT).
This humility in attributing success to divine blessings fosters gratitude and a constant seeking of guidance from Him.
Remembering our dependence on Allah safeguards us from arrogance, reminding us of His pivotal role in our achievements.
It protects us from arrogance and self-admiration, reminding us that without His help, we could achieve nothing.
As the Quran says, "And whatever blessings you have, it is from Allah" (16:53).
To my fellow faith-first entrepreneurs, I invite you to embrace the notion of Divine Success.
Let us not confine success to societal benchmarks but tether it to divine standards. Let our ambition transcend mere entrepreneurial pursuits, evolving into a beacon of faith-based success.
💭 Reflecting on Your Definition of Success
Reflect on your personal definition of success. Are you solely pursuing societal standards, focusing primarily on materialistic gains?
Understand that this could potentially hinder your spiritual growth, mental well-being, and sense of fulfillment.
Assess whether your current perspective on success aligns with your faith, values, purpose, and spiritual beliefs.
Consider adopting a holistic viewpoint that encompasses both worldly achievements and enduring virtues.
This exercise could guide you towards a more inclusive, spiritually grounding, and fulfilling journey of holistic success paving the the way for true prosperity in this life and the hereafter.
