Everything I Learned About Entrepreneurship, I Learned from the Quran
Lesson #20: Contentment
Al Salam Alaikum 🌱
This week, we’ll explore a crucial lesson from the Noble Quran about contentment and the dangers of arrogance in our entrepreneurial journey.
😰 The Contentment Conundrum
In today’s face-paced business world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly moving the goalposts, always seeking more without pausing to appreciate our achievements or express gratitude for our blessings.
This toxic entrepreneurial culture, fueled by secular ideals, constantly pushes us to want more, achieve more, and acquire more, often at the expense of our spiritual well-being and contentment.
The relentless pursuit of growth, profit, and market share can create a never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction.
We’re bombarded with messages that equals success with material wealth and social status, making it challenging to find contentment in what we have.
This culture of excess and competition not only strains our mental and physical health but also distances us from our faith, and from the Islamic principles of moderation, gratitude, and trust in Allah’s plan.
🌳 The Man with the Two Gardens
The Noble Quran provides us with a powerful story that illustrate this lesson perfectly.
In Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave), we find the tale of a man blessed with two bountiful gardens.
This man became arrogant due to his wealth, boasting to his companion about his superior status in terms of wealth and influence.
His companion, a believer responded with wisdom:
He reminded the wealthy man that all his prosperity came from Allah (SWT) and could be taken away at any moment.
However, the wealthy man refused to acknowledge this, claiming that even if he were to return to his Lord, he would surely find an even better place than his current gardens.
As a consequence of his arrogance and ingratitude, Allah (SWT) destroyed the man’s gardens, leaving him regretful and wishing he had not associated anyone with his Lord.
🔑 Key Lessons
This story teaches us valuable lessons as faith-first entrepreneurs:
❤️ Gratitude is Essential: Always remember that our success and blessings come from Allah, not solely from our efforts.
❌ Avoid Arrogance: No matter how successful we become, we should remain humble and acknowledge Allah’s role in our achievements.
🗝️ Contentment is Key: While striving for growth is important, we must also find contentment in our current blessings.
💨 Success is Temporary: Material success can be fleeting, so we should focus on building lasting value through good deeds and ethical business practices.
Take a moment to reflect on your recent business achievements.
Write down three things you’re grateful for in your entrepreneurial journey.
Then, make a short dua, thanking Allah (SWT) for these blessings and asking for guidance in using them to benefit others and please Him.
May Allah (SWT) bless our endeavors and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
