Everything I Learned About Entrepreneurship, I Learned from the Quran

Lesson 11: Momentum

Al Salam Alaikum 🌱

This week, we're exploring a fundamental concept in both entrepreneurship and our faith—Momentum.

Momentum acts like a driving force propelling us forward, aiding us in maintaining speed and progress on our entrepreneurial path.

The Quran and Hadith reference this principle, but let us also look at the Prophetic Seerah for a real-life demonstration of this concept.

One of the most inspiring examples of momentum in action can be traced back to the early years of Islam in Mecca.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his small group of followers were faced with severe opposition and hardship from the Quraysh, the dominant tribe in Mecca.

Despite the adversity, they persisted in spreading the message of Islam.

It was undoubtedly a slow and challenging process, and their progress might have seemed minimal initially.

However, through their consistent efforts, they were creating ripples of change. This was the beginning of a momentum that would gradually lead to a surge in followers.

This momentum culminated in the rapid spread of Islam following the Hijrah to Medina.

This significant momentum shift changed the course of Islamic history and was a powerful lesson for us in maintaining perseverance.

Another remarkable instance of momentum at work is the Battle of Badr.

The Muslims, despite being significantly outnumbered, managed to defeat the Quraysh. This victory was more than just a military success; it significantly boosted the morale and momentum of the Muslims, leading to the growth and expansion of the Muslim community.

Again, this demonstrates the transformative power of momentum, showing us that it can turn the tide, even under the most challenging circumstances.

Drawing from my personal experience, I have felt the power of momentum in my entrepreneurial journey.

When I started my first business, I faced a myriad of challenges. It felt like an uphill battle, with countless roadblocks in my path.

However, inspired by the lessons of momentum from the Quran and Hadith, I decided to take action, no matter how small.

With each step forward, no matter how insignificant it seemed, I was building momentum.

My faith in Allah and determination to persevere remained strong.

Each small victory added to this momentum, eventually leading to the growth and success of my business.

So, consider this your reminder that in business, as in life, momentum can be a powerful driving force.

It starts with taking that first step, followed by the next, and the next.

In the journey of achieving our goals, momentum plays a crucial role. Here are three actions and habits that can boost your momentum:

🔹 Three Actions

  1. The 2% Difference: Whenever a new idea sparks in your mind, don't wait. Act on it immediately, even if it's just the first 2%. This instant transition from idea to action keeps the momentum alive.

  2. The 5/95 Rule: Allocate 5% of your time to planning. The remaining 95% should be dedicated to taking action. Remember, action brings your plans to life.

  3. Revisit Your Intentions: Regularly remind yourself of why you started. Your intentions serve as fuel for your momentum.

🔸 Three Habits

  1. Align with the Divine Purpose: Always remember your larger, divine purpose and align your individual goals with it. This connection gives your actions a deeper meaning, boosting your motivation and momentum.

  2. Value Effort Over Results: Tie your self-worth to your efforts rather than the results. This mindset helps you stay motivated and maintain momentum, regardless of the outcome, which is ultimately in Allah’s hands.

  3. Be Part of an Uplifting Community: Surround yourself with people who inspire, uplift, and hold you accountable. This supportive Suhba (companionship) environment helps to sustain your momentum.

Incorporating these actions and habits into your routine can significantly enhance your momentum, propelling you towards your goals with incredible speed and consistency inshAllah.

🔑 Key Takeaways

- Momentum, seen in the history of Islam and personal experiences, is a powerful force that drives success in personal and professional lives.

- Even in challenging circumstances, perseverance can generate momentum that leads to significant change, as seen in the early years of Islam in Mecca and the Battle of Badr.

- Taking consistent action, no matter how small, can build momentum, leading to growth and success.

For the next week, challenge yourself to identify the power of momentum in your life with the following steps:

💭 Reflection: Spend 5 minutes each day reflecting on a situation where you saw momentum at work in your life. It could be a project at work, a personal goal, or a relationship.

📝 Documentation: Write down the actions or decisions that helped build momentum in that situation.

💨 Application: Think of a current goal or challenge. How can you apply the principles of momentum to drive progress in this area? Plan and take one small action each day towards this goal.

🤲 Closing Supplication

“O Allah, grant us the strength and guidance to take the necessary actions in our personal and professional lives, no matter how small, that will build momentum. Help us preserve in the face of challenges and use them as stepping stones to continue our progress.”
Ameen.
