Everything I Learned About Entrepreneurship, I Learned from the Quran
Lesson #17: Companionship
Al Salam Alaikum 🌱
In this week’s newsletter, I want to share some reflections on the importance of righteous companionship, or Suhba, in the journey of entrepreneurship.
As faith-first entrepreneurs, the people we surround ourselves with can significantly impact our spiritual, professional, and personal growth, our ambitions, and ultimately, our success in this life and the next.
The noble Quran emphasizes the importance of good companionship in several verses, one of which is found in Surah Al Kahf. Allah (SWT) says:
This verse beautifully highlights the value of surrounding ourselves with those who are steadfast in their remembrance of Allah and who seek His pleasure.
Such companions can remind us of our higher purpose and help keep us stay grounded in our faith, especially when faced with challenges and temptations of the entrepreneurial world.
🏔️ A Story of Companionship from the Time of the Prophet
During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him), one of the most beautiful examples of righteous companionship is the bond between the Prophet and Abu Bakr Al Sadiq (RA).
When the Prophet and Abu Bakr were migrating from Mecca to Medina, they faced dangers and hardships. Despite the risks, Abu Bankr remained steadfast at the Prophet’s side, offering his unwavering support and protection.
In one notable incident during their journey, they sought refuge in the cave of Thawr.
As the Quraysh were searching for them, Abu Bakr expressed his concern for the Prophet’s safety.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) comforted him, saying, “Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us” (Quran, 9:30).
This moment exemplifies the strength and faith that righteous companionship can provide, especially in times of difficulty.
👇️ Why Righteous Companionship is Essential
☪️ Spiritual Support: Righteous companionship can provide spiritual support and encouragement, helping you stay focused on your ultimate goal of pleasing Allah.
✅ Moral and Ethical Guidance: In the business world, you may encounter situations that challenge your morals and ethics. Having companions who share your values and principles can help guide you in making decisions that are in line with your faith.
🌟Positive Influence: The people you spend the most time with can significantly influence your thoughts, behaviors, and ambitions. Righteous companions inspire you to strive for Ihsan (spiritual excellence), not just in your professional endeavors, but also in your spiritual and personal life.
🙌 Accountability Partners: Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey, but having righteous companions can provide a sense of accountability. They can offer constructive feedback, help you stay on track with your goals, and hold you accountable to your commitments, both to your faith and your business.
💙 Emotional and Mental Support: The entrepreneurial journey is filled with highs and lows. Righteous companions can offer emotional and mental support during difficult times, providing encouragement, empathy, and a listening ear.
This week, take some time to reflect on the people you surround yourself with. Consider the following questions:
Do your companions encourage you to stay focused on your faith and ultimate goal of pleasing Allah (SWT)?
Do they provide moral and ethical guidance in your professional and personal life?
Do they inspire you to strive for Ihsan and elevate your ambitions?
Do they hold you accountable to your commitments and offer constructive feedback?
Do they provide emotional and mental support during challenging times?
Reflect on these questions and identify ways to strength your relationships with righteous companions.
Seek out individuals who will support you in your entrepreneurial journey and help you stay steadfast in your faith.
