Everything I Learned About Entreprenurship, I Learned From the Quran
Lesson 5: Purpose
Al Salam Alaikum 🌱
Today, we continue exploring entrepreneurial lessons through the lens of the Quran. This week, we delve into a concept central to our existence and crucial to our entrepreneurial journey: our purpose.
In the business world, we’re often encouraged to define the purpose of our entrepreneurial endeavors. We create mission statements, set business goals, and outline company visions.
Yet, we rarely transcend the business realm to contemplate our “divine purpose.”
Entrepreneurs often search for “purpose” in self-help or business books. However, the Noble Quran, preserved for over 1400 years, clearly outlines our true purpose.
Indeed, Allah (SWT) did not create us without a purpose. He states in the Quran:
This verse and others remind us that we were not created aimlessly and that our existence has a well-defined purpose.
We are also reminded of our role as Allah’s successors (Khalifa) on Earth:
As faith-first entrepreneurs, aligning our business journey with a higher purpose transforms our approach to business and our lives. This alignment is deeply rooted in faith, with the Quran outlining our divine purpose.
This transcends business, pointing us towards a higher calling of worship, servitude to Allah (SWT), and being His successors on Earth.
Infusing our entrepreneurial pursuits with this divine purpose brings a deeper sense of fulfillment and direction to our business journey.
You might wonder how our divine purpose aligns with our entrepreneurial journey. In my own experience, understanding my divine role has significantly influenced the decisions I make in my business.
My main purpose in starting Workship Labs was to turn my frustration with the startup world into a holistic, faith-based entrepreneurial education as an Islamic alternative to mainstream business principles.
Inspired by the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah, Workship Labs offers practical frameworks, models, and tools to help entrepreneurs thrive spiritually and financially.
My mission is to transform work into an act of worship and utilize business as a form of dawah.
This way, Workship Labs contributes to my smaller personal purpose by enabling me to serve Allah (SWT) through my professional endeavors.
On a larger scale, it allows me to fulfill my divine purpose as a Khalifa (Successor) on Earth, fostering a community of faith-first entrepreneurs who also serve Allah (SWT) through their work.
So, I encourage you to reflect on your divine purpose. How does it guide your entrepreneurial decisions? How can you align your business practices with this higher purpose?
Remember, our businesses are part of our life’s journey, which is all about fulfilling our divine purpose.
Our overarching divine Purpose, as set by Allah (SWT), is to worship Him and serve as His successors on Earth.
Yet within this grand Purpose, each of us has a unique purpose.
As successors, we each have distinct contributions to make, seamlessly connecting our individual purpose with the larger divine scheme.
🔑 Key Takeaways
The Quran outlines our divine purpose: to worship Allah (SWT) and act as His successors on Earth.
Aligning our entrepreneurial journey with our divine purpose can provide a renewed sense of mission and profoundly influence our business decisions.
As successors, we each have a unique role within this larger purpose.
Here's a practical exercise for you to complete this weekend.
Step 1: Find a quiet and comfortable space to focus without distractions.
Step 2: Contemplate your divine purpose. Ask yourself if you feel you are truly living it. Take a moment to jot down any thoughts or feelings that come up.
Step 3: Reflect on your smaller purpose. This could be your current role or job, your passion project, or any other endeavor you're currently focused on. How does this smaller purpose align with your larger divine purpose? Write down how your smaller purpose is contributing to your larger one.
Remember, this exercise is not a one-time thing. It's a constant process of reflection and alignment.
