The Sunnah of Small Deeds

How Prophet Muhammad Built the Ultimate Success System

Al Salam Alaikum 🌱

While the world around us may celebrate January 1st with grand resolutions that often fade by February, we as Muslims have been given something far more profound: the example of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his approach to building lasting, meaningful change.

👣 The Wisdom in Small Beginnings

The Prophet Muhammad wasn’t just a spiritual leader; he was the most successful entrepreneur in human history.

Before his prophethood, he built a thriving business with such integrity that he was known as “Al-Amin” (The Trustworthy).

After his mission began, he transformed not just individual hearts, but entire economic and social systems.

His secret? Small consistent actions powered by crystal-clear spiritual intentions.

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Actions are by intentions” (Bukhari), he wasn’t just giving spiritual advice- he was revealing the fundamental principle of sustainable success.

Every habit, every goal, every business decision starts with the question:

This is where most entrepreneurs- Muslims and non-Muslims alike- get it wrong. They focus on the what and how without anchoring the why in something transcendent.

🎯 The Prophetic Goal-Setting Revolution

Start with Akhira, Build for Duniya: The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) taught us to seek the Hereafter, and Allah (SWT) would give us the world as well.

In business terms: when your primary intention is earning Allah’s pleasure, worldly success becomes a natural byproduct, not an anxious chase.

Before you set your business goals this Muharram, ask yourself:

  • How will this goal bring me closer to Allah (SWT)?

  • How will achieving this serve the Ummah?

  • If I succeed, will I be a better Muslim, or just a richer one?

The 70,000 ROI Principle: Remember the hadith about spending in Allah’s path? The person who spends while going out for jihad receives 700,000 dirhams reward for every dirham spent.

What is most important here is to acknowledge that this is more than just charity. It is about understanding that Allah (SWT) multiplies the return on intentions made for His sake.

Apply this to your business: When you hire that employee with the intention of providing halal income for a Muslim family, when you price fairly with the intention of embodying prophetic ethics, when you innovate with the intention of solving problems for humanity- you’re not just building a business, you’re accumulating rewards that compound for eternity, inshAllah.

⌛️ Lessons from the Prophet’s Daily Rhythm

Every morning, the Prophet would engage in dhikr and dua, setting his spiritual and practical intentions for the day. This was not separate from “work”- I would go so far as to say that it was the foundation that made everything else effective.

Modern parallel: Start your day with 10 minutes of dhikr and/or Quran and intention-setting. Before checking emails or diving into tasks, connect with your Creator and clarify your purpose. Watch how this transforms not just your productivity, but the quality of your decisions.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) didn’t build the Muslim community through sporadic bursts of intense effort. He showed up consistently- teaching, trading, mediating, leading- day after day.

When Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

The Prophet’s business success came from one simple principle: radical honesty and integrity. In a marketplace full of cheats and shortcuts, being “Al-Amin” was more than just good ethics- it was the ultimate business strategy.

🌱 The Muharram Opportunity: Your Fresh Start

Muharram offers us something beautiful: a chance to begin again with the wisdom of prophetic methodology.

  1. Set Spiritually-Anchored Goals

Instead of: “I want to make $100k this year”

Try: “I want to earn $100k this year so I can increase my charity and zakat, provide better for my family, and have resources to serve the Ummah.”

  2. Build Prophetic Micro-Habits

Before every important meeting or decision, spend 5 minutes in istighfar and asking Allah (SWT) for guidance. The Prophet never made major decisions without seeking Allah’s help.

  3. The Compound Effect of Islamic Business Principles

Going above and beyond for customer is more than just good business- it’s following the Prophet’s example of ihsan (spiritual excellence) in all things. Similarly, building wealth through completely halal means might seem slower, but it comes with Allah’s barakah- a blessing that multiplies impact in ways you can’t measure.

The Unseen ROI of Faith-First Entrepreneurship

Here’s what the secular business world doesn’t understand: when you build with spiritual intentions and prophetic principles, you’re not just creating financial returns- you’re generating barakah.

Barakah is Allah’s blessing that makes small efforts yield large results, that brings unexpected opportunities, that protects your business in ways you never see coming. It’s the secret ingredient that transformed a small community in Madinah into a global civilization.

The companions understood this. When they embraced Islam, their businesses didn’t just survive- they thrived.

Sayidna Othman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) became so wealthy through ethical trading that he could fund entire armies. Abdulrahman Ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) built such successful enterprises that his charity alone could feed thousands.

As we begin this new Islamic year, let’s commit to the prophetic way of change.

  1. Choose ONE small deed that you can do consistently.

  2. Make it so simple that you could do it even on your worst day.

  3. Connect it to an existing habit (like making dhikr right after Fajr)

  4. Track it simply- a mark on your calendar/planner is enough

  5. Be patient with the process- remember, the Prophet built his character over 40 years before Allah (SWT) chose him to be the final prophet and the Last Messenger.

📿 The Promise of Prophetic Success

Allah (SWT) promises in the Noble Quran:

“And whoever fears Allah- He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect.” (65:2-3)

Please don’t take this to mean spiritual comfort- it’s a business principle.

When you anchor your entrepreneurial journey in taqwa and follow prophetic guidelines, Allah (SWT) opens doors you never knew existed.

This Muharram, as you build your business goals and daily habits, remember that you’re not just creating wealth- you’re following in the footsteps of the most successful entrepreneur in history.

The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) started with small acts of honesty in trade and built a legacy that transformed the world.

Your small, consistent, spiritually-anchored habits might just be the seeds of something extraordinary.

Your small deed is that seed. This Muharram is your season of planting. And Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy will provide the growth, inshAllah.

🤲 Closing Dua

“May the year 1447 Hijri be one where we and our businesses draw closer to Allah (SWT) through the beautiful simplicity of prophetic habits.”

Ameen
